Intro By Creator: This is not a traditional meatball. It’s MUCH better! It’s a cross between a meatball, a hamburger and meatloaf. You have to make it to “get it”.
Creator's Notes & Tips
These meatballs are fried and are typically not round, but more oval and like a disk. You can make them really small for cocktails and dipping sauces too.
They go incredibly well with just about any type of sauce you can think of. Also great on sandwiches. As soon as you make it, you’ll find a dozen ways to eat it.
This is one of those rare treats that even tastes great cold!
How To Make It Delishier
Ingredients
For the Meatballs
- 2 cups minced pork (1 pound) (or any type of ground meat – 50/50 beef/pork best)
- 1 whole egg
- 1 medium Spanish onion finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika powder
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 slices white bread 0,2 pound
- 1/4 cup fine breadcrumbs
- 1 cup vegetable oil sunflower, canola – for Frying… NOT to put into the meat mixture!!!
- salt
Instructions
- In a saucepan sauté the finely chopped Spanish onions in vegetable oil over low heat, stirring frequently, until translucent. Do not let them burn. Salt lightly to help tenderize them.
- Remove the pot from the heat, add the paprika, stir well. Do not burn the paprika or it will become bitter!
- Soak the bread in water and then squeeze it dry using your hands.
- Combine the ground pork, the egg, the squeezed bread, the minced garlic, the sautéed onions mixed with paprika, ground black pepper and salt to taste.
- Heat 1 cup of oil in a pan or use a deep fryer. Shape the ground meat mixture into balls in the palm of your hands. Wet your hands with some water, it helps to form the balls or discs. Roll the balls in breadcrumbs.
- Place the meatballs in the hot oil, giving them enough space in between for rolling around. Fry both sides over medium high heat until cooked through, it takes about 5 minutes/side. Transfer the meatballs to a paper towel to drain.
